United National Party (UNP) Colombo district leader and MP Ravi Karunanayaka addressing a press briefing held in the capital today (30) said that the time is ripe for the government to pack the baggage to go home.
Mr. Karunanayaka slammed the government and the leadership for increasing the cost of living to an intolerable height, for increasing the price of fuel again since yesterday (29) and the for corruption.
The UNP MP said that the government increased fuel prices 19 times within the 19 months in power since 2004. A liter of petrol that was Rs. 51 when the UNP handed over the government is Rs. 117 now. The percentage of increase is 129%. A liter of diesel that was Rs. 32 to increased by 134% to Rs. 75 and the price of kerosene increased by 172%. Mr. Karunanayaka said that eating three meals a day is a dream today as the prices of all commodities have gone up.
Mr. Karunanayaka further said that Sri Lanka is one of the five countries where the commodity prices are highest. Sri Lanka is one of the five countries where the hunger is maximum, he said. He enquired if the petrol and diesel prices affect the hens whose eggs have gone up from four rupees in 2004 to nine rupees now.
