Judiciary on the right track...

Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court today (13) rejected granting bail to Malaka Silva, son of Minister of Labor Dr. Mervin Silva who was accused of assaulting an accountant at a nightclub in Colombo.

The suspect was produced before Additional Magistrate of Mount Lavinia Ms. Darshika Wimalasiri today. Considering the motion for bail by the counsels appearing for the suspect, the Magistrate said that the court had no powers to grant him bail in accordance with the preliminary B-report submitted by Police.

The Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded till September 19.

The suspect Malaka Silva arrived in the courts in an ambulance yesterday (12). The counsels informed the courts that the suspect was severely ill and could not walk in to the courts. The Magistrate inspected the suspect while he was in the ambulance.

Considering the bail application again Magistrate Ms. Darshika Wimalasiri said that the court had no power to grant bail and asked the application to be forwarded to a higher court. She also ordered the prison officials to provide the suspect Malaka Silva necessary medical facilities.

Hmm, it looks like Malaka feels fit enough attack other people while surrounding himself with bodyguards (most probably paid by taxpayers’ money), but hasn’t got the ‘balls’ to stand up to face the consequences…!
