A proposal to thank the President was defeated in Mathara Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) today. The proposal was defeated with a majority of 10 votes in the Mathara PS in which the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) holds power.
Eight of the nine SLFP MPs in the PS voted against the proposal to thank the President.
The proposal was brought to thank the President for appointing Upul Nishantha as the Mathara electoral organizer and Sosendra Handunneththi as the district organizer after removing Mangala Samaraweera from the posts he held. The proposal was made by Lasantha Sanjeewa and was seconded by Chairman Chandrasiri Devasurendra.
Only the members who proposed and seconded the proposal voted for it. Eight SLFP members and the four UNP members voted against the proposal. The two JVP members and the Communist Party member abstained voting.
Meanwhile, the Mathara Pradeshiya Sabha earlier passed a proposal to congratulate Mr. Samaraweera unanimously with all 18 MPs voting for it, after Samaraweera was removed from the portfolio.
